The ceremonies are performed over the course of four days.Holy bathing, fasting and abstaining from drinking water (vrata), standing in water, and offering prasad (prayer offerings) and arghya to the setting and rising sun are among them. Some devotees also march to the river's edge in a kind of prostration.

The Chhath festival is regarded by environmentalists as one of the world's greenest religious celebrations.Every devotee makes identical offerings and prasada (religious food). The Terai region of Nepal and the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Jharkhand are where the festival is most frequently held, although it is also widely observed in countries where migrants and the diaspora from those regions are present.
